There hasn’t been a single moment in my life where I have not lived with animals. From dogs and cats to hamsters and iguanas, my life revolves around them and I love all species. This passion is what drove me to become a registered veterinary technician. I wanted to be a part of a community that helped these pets live their best life all while educating owners on how to provide the best care.

I found a veterinary technician school that was not too far from my house that offered classroom lessons and I signed up that day. There are also online schools however, I’m a hands-on person and needed to learn in-person. The program was only 27 months and included a 3-month internship that allowed me to put all my book knowledge to the test in real life. I absolutely recommend completing an internship/externship because the skills I learned set me a step ahead of students without that experience. The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) offers resources for you to learn more.

After graduating with my associates, I was finally able to help save lives! My first job was 3rd shift at an ER hospital and I must thank all of my girls and doctors on that shift for my excellent skills and ability to work under pressure. My favorite test of skills was one Labor Day morning when a boxer came in that was hit by a car. The intern was frozen in fear while my team of RVTs grabbed the ultrasound, chest tapping supplies, placed an IV catheter, started fluids, and got the surgical suite prepped. We were running like a well-oiled machine, adrenaline flowing, but minds focused. I was in the zone and we were determined to save him and sure enough he walked out of the hospital 5 days later! This was the whole reason I wanted into the veterinary field, to help save lives.

There are several more job opportunities for RVTs if the story above was too daunting. Now technicians can work as claims adjusters for pet insurance companies, representatives for veterinary products, educators, research assistants, wildlife rescue, shelter medicine and so much more! THRIVE offers several positions for technicians that allow them to grow and expand their skillset. Check out THRIVE’s open positions and join a team that loves fun and pets.
