Fleas & Tick Prevention

If your dog or cat is suffering from flea and/or tick infestations, the continual aggravation caused by these pests means that they are not thriving. Fleas can cause itchy skin, skin infections, and spread tapeworms. Ticks carry several diseases that can cause serious health problems, such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Hepatozoonosis and Babesiosis.

Dogs and cats can also carry several intestinal parasites. Some of those are transmissible to humans (especially children and immunocompromised adults).

At Thrive, we recommend Revolution for cats. It is a monthly topical medication that controls hookworms, roundworms, ear mites, fleas, and heartworms. For dogs, we offer a variety of products depending on what your dog’s needs are. For example Sentinel is an oral monthly prevention that controls fleas, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and heartworms. It must be given with food. ProHeart6 is an injectable heartworm prevention that lasts for 6 months and also controls hookworms. It is the perfect solution for those of us that have trouble remembering to give heartworm preventives monthly. TriHeart is a yummy chewable tablet that is given every month to control heartworms, hookworms and roundworms.

Although the most common intestinal parasites are controlled with monthly prevention, there are some (such as Giardia and Coccidia) that are not. At THRIVE we strongly recommend annual fecal examinations to test for these parasites.
